A Tender plant, also called 'Snow Banana' because of the white bloom on the pseudostem
2013
I bought a load of seeds from ebay ana managed to get 3 to germinate, I gave one to my dad and kept two, here they are 28th March 2013
I cant remember what I did with them the rest of the year but I think I left them potted in the greenhouse.
2014
April. One of the two is shown here almost rotting before starting into growth
Not impressed with their size I kept them potted outdoors as seen here on 30th June
At the end of the year they were pretty much exactly the same size, I obviously had not given them the heat and water they need.
2015
One rotted and died in the spring, the other was still very small, here on 15th May
4th June, planted in West facing border:
Due to its slow growth it was totally swamped by the plants around it as the season went on. both these pictures are from 19th August
Dug up and put in the conservatory in early November
Until the wife made me move it, here on December 17th after moving into my office at work (25c, south facing window) It is not currently growing, and hasn't grown at all since I dug it up. All the other ensete in the conservatory have carried on growing. I think this ensete needs much more heat to grow than the other ones I have. Hopefully it will now start growing, otherwise rot might set in.
2016
January 6thAfter coming back from new years holidays it has started into growth (yay!)
April 14th
It is now 4ft from top of pot to tip of leaf, but its pretty leggy due to having heat but not much light
I moved it to the conservatory for about a month to get it accustomed to full sun before planting out. windows are left open at night for plants to get used to cool nights
June 6th- now in the garden
June 11th - Oh dear this isn't looking too good
June 14th
This reinforces my belief that this banana is not suitable for growing in the UK
Cut back hoping for (but not expecting) some growth
July 27th, it lives!
September 10th - Not enormous but it has continued to grow
November 2016 Whoops I left it out and it got frosted. Now dug up and placed in the greenhouse for winter
